Mark Muller and his wife buy a small country cottage and 100 acres in picturesque Columbia County, New York, as a weekend retreat. Mark and his wife soon encounter an escalating wave of missing items and vandalism that threatens his weekend solitude. As Muller investigates he uncovers a mystery dating back 35 years; which is still unfolding and affecting the lives of those involved. A moral dilemma develops that forces previously unimaginable choices and compels him into an examination of his own life and beliefs. Set in the beautiful hills of Columbia County, the ‘old’ clashes with the ‘new’ as weekenders and second home owners gradually contest for primacy in the community and reshape its character. Muller, caught in these forces, struggles to uncover the mystery and bring redemption to himself and the land. Rich with local folklore, his story is beautiful and moving, about biblical truths, lost love and the redemptive power that can reshape life in the face of tragedy.

Mr. Breyer has written a compelling and facinating mystery centered around a mountain from which his characters take their character. He weaves his tale of intrigue, history, rugged individualism, lost opportunities, heroism, guilt and triumphs into a believable mix of emotions that produce both moral lessons and a rare understanding of how elusive justice can be in lives shattered by war and built on deceits. After three chapters I could not put it down! Really good writing!
This is author Peter Breyer's first novel; I loved his earlier "My Sister A Journey to Myself", which is a compelling autobiographical story. This mystery builds slowly and covers several distant and local lands, many decades, and different feuding cultures. Breyer carefully interweaves these seemingly unrelated times and events, adds divergent players into a intriguing story that is centered around local upstate NY character and its colorful characters and folklore! The clashes that result are recognizable universally. All in all, a good read that draws you into its intriguing web.
Peter Breyer tells a deep and moving story which searches the past to bring light and understanding on the present. The book flows seamlessly from a very isolated Columbia County before the Second World War to a surge of weekenders and second homeowners in the eighties. Mark Mueller and his wife, weekenders from New Jersey, buy a small house and more than a hundred acres of land on the side of a mountain to use as a second home. Then the troubles begin. As Mark begins to build a road up his mountain, he digs up more than memories from the past. He digs up the deep resentments of locals who have inhabited Columbia County for decades and in some cases centuries before.

Mark is not a typical weekender. He cuts his own logs, builds his own barn and constructs his own road up the mountain. He also begins to build a bridge between himself and the people who have lived on this land for so long. The building of that bridge is the essence of this terrific book.
