Red Sky Anthology Reading Aloud in Northern Michigan/ Red Sky Series, Book 1

Refreshing, compassionate, funny, Randy Evans's border-crossing collection (light verse to novels) never loses Randy's voice or identity as he shifts from one genre to another.

Enjoy poetry about the beauty of northern Michigan. Read a short story about Big Little Hawk, a single mother who lives on a promontory overlooking Little Traverse Bay during the Bronze Age; a second story about Mikage, a Japanese American woman who shoots her way out of a bad marriage to save Gino, her parakeet; a one-act play about Stanley Sly, the worst boss you can imagine.

Experience magical realism in a love fable about Trella, a cottonwood tree. Find hope and redemption in Out of the Inferno A Husband's Passage Through Cancerland (novel excerpt), Randy's memoir about his decade as a husband caregiver for his wife who died of breast cancer (contains important lessons for those who care for others with chronic illness, or cancer patients who need information about how long-term cancer survivors manage their quality of life).

Laugh you head off at Leo Zitzelberger who buys a bankrupt golf course to found The Lawnmower Club for men like himself who have lost their homes, but are obsessed with cutting grass (novel excerpt). Leo battles Gloria Fitting, a social worker, who wants to place poor Leo in Mallard Pond, a nursing home, stuffy Hazard Pembrook who wants to restore his family's golf course to its former glory, and a rogue cougar who looks for a new territory in northern Michigan after attacking a dental hygienist in Wisconsin. Avid grass cutters in your life will enjoy this fun and original story (novel excerpt).

Read about laid-off Rebecca who finds love, mystery, and adventure in northern Michigan after she decides to visit her father, a war-damaged recluse, who lives on Devil's Elbow, a sharp bend in The Crooked River (novel excerpt).

Red Sky Anthology is the first of four books in Red Sky Series Out of the Inferno A Husbands Passage Through Cancerland (Book 2), Crooked River Love and Adventure in Northern Michigan (Book 3), and The Lawnmower Club How Leo Zitzelberger Lost and Found Paradise on Earth (Book 4).

As a Michigander, the Up North settings are refreshing without feeling forced.

The Lawnmower Club is my favorite excerpt and I would recommend it to any man. It’s clever, unique and you will laugh.

Evans has excellent word choice describing people and scenes with clarity and humor. For example, Leo's mouth reluctantly smiled like a wound opening. In another story, a sweating fruit shaped business manager slides into his chair like wet concrete.

A common thread emerged of taking chances after being duped by perceived societal rules.

At a Petoskey luncheon I listened to the author read excerpts from this book. First he read part of the autobiographical story of living with his wife's cancer diagnosis. Then he read a portion of Leo Zitzleberger's utopian Lawnmower Club. I found myself reading with Evans' steady auditory cadence, which accents his subtle humor. I could imagine Bill Murray's or Jerry Seinfeld's voice behind the words with their patient timing and dry delivery.

Evans' public reading was emotional; there was not a dry eye in the room. Then everyone was laughing out loud about lawnmowerians. With knowledge of what to expect, I was still misty eyed reading this book. Hearing the honesty and imagining his challenge to recount that period with his family makes for chapters that must be finished before putting the book down.

Between the varied literary styles of poetry, theatre, short stories, memoir, and humor, there was a feeling of being an observer while the author explored his own writing limits and comfort zones.

I'm glad I bought this book and will order the next three books in the series.

Red Sky Anthology edition by Randy Evans Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I've heard such great things about this book, I can't wait to read it!
Funny, charming....great dialogue!
This is an anthology for up-north readers who appreciate finely crafted literature. I especially gravitated to the poetry, being a poet myself. Randy has a way of metaphorically tapping into your sensitivities about nature and seasons like the best of them. One can almost feel, along with the trees, the change in the air as fall turns into winter. Those of us who know and appreciate the lakes, forests and wildlife of northern Michigan can identify with a cottage deck in fall, smell of wood smoke in the air, an autumn boating excursion, an April snow that leaves tree trunks "whiskered with wind-whipped snow," trillium breaking through in the spring. My favorite was "Fishing for Wind," which is exactly what it feels like if you've ever set a kite loose over a field or lake on a sporadically windy day.
Trella the Love Fable of an Oak Tree pulls at your heart strings if you ever pondered the "feelings" those old forest trees might harbor as they stand guard over the years of their existence.
The "Out of the Inferno A husband's Passage Through Cancerland" struck close to home, almost too home, having lost my husband to the disease. He got it all the shock of diagnosis, the hopeful efforts towards an elusive cure, and the acceptance of the inevitable finality of death.
Read and feel. It will shake out your emotions and hang them up to air.

Red Sky Anthology is an eclectic blend of poems, short stories, and excerpts with which the author introduces us to his observations and insights into the nature of our lives. Fortunately, author Randy Evans is quite talented at presenting these insights so that his anthology is an enjoyable and absorbing read.

In addition to an impressive skill at his craft, author Randy Evans possesses two noteworthy talents that will draw you in to the stories and poems that he presents in this anthology. First, he has a remarkable insight into human nature combined with a real talent in describing that insight in a compelling manner. Second, he is very skilled in setting the environment and the mood which will effectively support each presentation. Mr. Evans uses these talents to capture your interest and understanding more skillfully than most, so that walking with your neighbors through Mr. Evan’s eyes is an experience that will invariably enrich and deepen your own views and understanding of the life experiences we all share in this world.

You will feel yourself enjoying this enrichment while preparing for winter in North Country Petoskey, while Fishing for Wind, while struggling with the impact of cancer in the family, while leaving your position at the mill, and, oh yes, even while mowing the lawn with Zitzelberger and his favorite philosophical cougar. Red Sky Anthology is a remarkable collection. Highly recommended.
Red Sky Anthology is just that. If you view it in that light then I believe that you will have a wonderful reading experience. Northern Michigan is lucky to have a venue such as the Red Sky Stage where artists, musicians, writers and others can showcase their work before the public. Randy Evans has collected a wide range of his work that has been presented at this venue. Insightful and with a visually rich style Red Sky Anthology presents work ranging from poetry to memoir, from a one act play to excerpts from novels. There is something for everyone. The author manages to maintain his voice as he creates a mountain lion with a deep intellect, the personification of a tree, or in the deeply moving memoir that chronicles the passing of his wife from cancer. Red Sky Anthology is worth your read. I am sure that you will find many aspects of this book colorful, luminous, and imaginative. Randy Evans is a multi-talented writer who has created worlds that are realistic, believable, well-formed and entertaining. Between the covers of Red Sky Anthology you will find a wonderful reading experience, as I did.
Great read! Excited for more from the author
